Travel

Bensheim is small but well-connected to nearby cities and the airport via the railway system and highway, so there are good options for travel both by train and car.

  • Nearest Train Station: “Bensheim” — Note: There is always a queue of Taxis outside of this train station that can take you to your accommodations

Bensheim is one of many near-by small cities that make up the “Bergstrasse” (Mountain Street). It’s easy to travel between them by car or train, so you may want to explore accommodation options both within and beyond Bensheim.

 

Some cities to search in:

  • Bensheim — benefit of being close to the Reception, but not many hotels of note. Recommend Airbnb

  • Auerbach — the town right next to Bensheim, meaning you could likely walk or otherwise take a few minutes car / train ride to the Reception

  • Zwingenberg — two towns over, easy by both train (5min) and car (8min)

  • Bickenbach — three towns over, easy by both train (10min) and car (12min)

  • Lorsch — very small town near Bensheim, for a peaceful stay (recommend having a car)

  • Heppenheim — the biggest town near Bensheim, may have better selection of hotels, and easy by both train (3-10min) and car (13min)

  • Weinheim — a bit further away (20min car, 30min bus/train) but can be worthwhile given the beauty of this small town (recommend having a car)

  • Heidelberg — further away (30min car, 40min train) but will have the most high-end options and things to do

  • There are many more lovely cities nearby, these are just some ideas to get you started! :-)

THINGS TO DO

Ideas for things to do outside of our planned events!

 

Bensheim lies along the Bergstrasse in the Odenwald. While we highly recommend exploring places across Germany, here are some of our recommendations for nearby cities and spots to consider for your agenda

  • Drive/hike to nearby castles!

    • Auerbacher Schloss — a Thomsen family favorite. Can easily drive there, includes parking, and has a restaurant as well. Make sure to check the opening times before heading here!

    • Schloss Heidelberg — this is a grand castle in the region’s most historically significant city Heidelberg. Beautiful views from the top.

    • Explore all castles of the region here — you can select your language in the top right menu

  • Hike up to Bensheim’s most famous vantage point: Kirchberghäuschen!

    • They offer drinks, ice cream, and classic Odenwald dishes (try the “Kochkäse Mit Musilk”!)

    • Note: no car access!

  • Hike around the Odenwald forest!

  • Explore the UNESCO World Heritage site “Kloster Lorsch”

    • This is a beautiful small monastery in the nearby town named Lorsch. You could drive there and make an afternoon of it!

  • Enjoy local restaurants & cafés

    • Hahnmühle (they are also catering our wedding!)

    • India Palace

    • Blauer Aff (traditional German food)

  • If you need to run any errands:

    • For groceries, home goods: Edeka, Lidl

    • For medicine, sunscreen, etc: search for “Apotheke” on Google Maps, there are many locations in the area!
